Utah State University’s
Communication Studies club has added a new social media officer position this semester. This position creates a social media presence for
current, past and future members and a way to meet potential employers.
“One of the hopes for
this position is to create an alumni network of communication studies
graduates,” said Chance Johnson, the club president. “This would be an
excellent way to network and keep connections with those that are in the work
force and grad school level.”
Matt Morgan, the
director of the Council of Student Clubs and Organizations, said Utah State’s
Student Association plans to work with the clubs to implement a social media
position into all the active clubs.
“It is going to become
common,” Morgan said. “We are working on it now and hope to have the positions
sometime next year.”
The clubs are
all student-run with faculty mentors to assist each club. Professor of communication studies John Seiter is the mentor for the Communication Studies
club. He said his position exists as a formality and the students do all the
work.
“I like to say I am
the wind beneath their wings,” he said.
Johnson said the club
offers a wide variety of activities. Last year it had a barbecue, a white
elephant gift party and a panel with professors to discuss graduate school and
professional options. He said the club hopes to add to the previous activities
they have done.
“It is primarily a
social club,” Seiter said. “The club provides an outlet for students to
socialize, network and build community. In addition, we sometimes host
practical events such as discussions with faculty on how to get a job and
research talks.”
The club is open for
all communication studies majors and pre-majors. It meets the first Monday of
each month at 11:30 a.m. in Old Main.
